Born in Quebec, Stanley Read earned his B.A. (1923) and M.A. (1925) from McGill University. After teaching English in Chicago, he joined the Department of English at the University of British Columbia in 1946. He continued to teach in the department until his retirement in 1968. Read played an instrumental role in the organization of International House at UBC.
