Walter Goeppinger was born in Boone, Iowa, and received a B.S. (1933) in Industrial Science at Iowa State College (University). In addition to serving as the President of the ISU Alumni Association (1940) and on the Memorial Union Board of Directors, he also served on the committee that gathered funding for the establishment of the Special Collections Department at the Iowa State University Library (1969). Goeppinger also served a 17-year term as President of the National Corn Growers' Association and organized the 1960 Hog Lift to Iowa's sister state in Japan, Yamanashi Prefecture, which had suffered typhoon damage.
