Teacher and scholar specializing in ectoprocta, evolution biogeography and ecology, evolution of marine invertebrates and marine communities. Born in 1931 at Taree, NSW, Australia; educated at the University of Sydney (BSc, 1953; PhD (geol) 1959; DSc, 1974. Research fellow, Yale University, 1957-60; research associate, University of Illinois, 1960-65; research associate, Western Washington University, 1965-67. Member of the Biology department faculty, Western Washington University, 1967 to date.
