Headquarters of the Fourth Military District were Vicksburg, Mississippi, with other posts at Jackson, Natchez, Brookhaven, Grenada, Columbia, Corinth, Holly Springs, and Lauderdale. Gillem was born in 1830 in Tennessee; during the Civil War, he rose to Brigadier General of All (Union) Volunteers in Tennessee; he served as commander of the Fourth Military District, 1866-1869; he died 1875.
