McAmis, Ava Josephine, 1897-1991

Ava Josephine McAmis was born in San Antonio, Texas, on 1897 January 9, the daughter of Charles Miller (1867-1938) and Mary Cobb (born 1868) McAmis. Her brother Hugh, a well-known San Antonio organist and musician, was killed in World War II. After attending Randolph-Macon Woman’s College in Virginia, Ava worked as a tutor at the University of Texas while earning her master’s degree. She then worked as a faculty member at the UT College of Pharmacy, which then led to a position at Yale, where she earned her Ph.D. in chemistry. After several years in New England, McAmis returned to San Antonio, where she lectured at Incarnate Word College (now the University of the Incarnate Word) and was a faculty member at San Antonio College. During her career, McAmis was granted membership to many honorary fraternities, including Phi Beta Kappa, Sigma Xi, Delta Kappa Gamma, and Iota Sigma Pi. A direct descendant of Charles Mote Walters, McAmis was also a member of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas. She died in San Antonio on 1991 July 16.
