Historical Note: The Department of Art and Education was one of many formal titles under which the art education program was known since the founding of Teachers College. In the earliest years of Teachers College, from 1887-1895, art education was included as a component of manual training. In 1895 a separate department of art education was established; under various early-20th century reorganizations, the work was carried on in departments of Fine Arts and of Industrial Arts. During the period 1939 to 1966, programs in art education were offered through the combined Department of Fine and Industrial Arts; and from 1966 to 1982, through the Department of Art and Education. From 1982 to 1986, the program was organized as the Program of Art and Education in the Department of Music and Arts in Education; in 1986 it became the Program in Art and Art Education in the Department of the Arts in Education. Thus the records in this group were created by the Department of Fine and Industrial Arts and the Department of Art and Education.
