Whaling and sealing master and U.S. naval officer, of East Haddam, Conn.; operated primarily out of New Bedford, Mass., and New London, Conn., sailing vessels to the Antarctic and Arctic regions (ca. 1875-1919); in addition to normal activities as shipmaster, recorded notes on Eskimo life, took photographs, and collected artifacts which he then contributed to the American Museum of Natural History in New York City; b. 1858; d. 1937.
