In the early twentieth century, at the Inland Steel plants in Indiana Harbor in East Chicago, Indiana, workers organized as Lodge 56 of the Amalgamated Association of Iron, Steel and Tin Workers. In 1936 Lodge 56 became affiliated with the new Steel Workers Organizing Committee and reorganized as Inland Lodge 1101, for employees at Plant #1 of Inland Steel, and Inland Lodge 1010, at Plant #2. In December 1937, following the contentious "Little Steel" strike, the two lodges rejoined as Inland Lodge 1010. The Inland Steel Company fought against union efforts until September 1941, when negotiations began. In 1942 Inland Lodge 1010 became Local 1010 of the newly created United Steelworkers of America.
