John T. Dabinett was a career Army officer but not a graduate of the United States Military Academy (USMA). He was a Signal Corps officer during World War II.

Dabinett commanded a special signal company to support the activities of the Office of Strategic Services; also participated and conducted special warfare operations in suport of the invasion of Sicily. In 1943 joined the Fifth Army as an executive officer of a joint provisional warfare of battalion size.
