From 1926 to at least the mid 1930s, Helmer Johnson lived on Chatham Creek, a tributary of Cleary Creek, approximately 20 miles northeast of Fairbanks, Alaska. He was a partner in the Chatham Gold Dredging Company, which operated a small bucket line dredge, the first such dredge in the Fairbanks Mining District.
