Jack Dayton Key was born February 24, 1934, in Enid, Oklahoma. After service in the United States Navy (1952-1955) he attended Phillips University (B.A., 1958), the University of New Mexico (M.A., 1960), and the University of Illinois (M.S., 1962).While in New Mexico he served as assistant librarian (1958-59) and medical librarian (1965-70) at the Lovelace Foundation for Medical Education and Research in Albuquerque. At the University of Illinois Key served as the staff supervisor at the Graduate Library (1960-62) before moving to the University of Iowa and serving as the pharmacy librarian (1962- 64). Since 1970, until his retirement as director emeritus and professor emeritus, Key served at the Mayo Clinic and Foundation.Key has been a member of the Mystery Writers of America, Medical Library Association, American Institute of the History of Pharmacy, American Association of the History of Medicine, American Medical Writers Association, American Osler Society, Alcuin Society, Sigma Xi, Pi Sigma Alpha, Rotary International (historian, 1975-87; member of executive board, 1976-87; president and member of district advisory council, both 1979-80), Baker Street Irregulars (investiture, 1989 as "Pritchard"), Ampersand Club, and the Norwegian Explorers.
