Bowen, born in New York state, moved with his family to Michigan in 1836 and to Illinois in 1843. He graduated from Hahnemann Medical College and practiced briefly in Chicago before moving to Fort Wayne, Ind. in 1852. He later served as president of the Indiana Institute of Homeopathy.

Student at the Cleveland Institute of Homeopathy. He later served in the 5th U.S. Colored Infantry Regiment during the Civil War and went on to practice medicine in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
