The Rev. Lewis Loder Gilbert (1898-1978) and his wife, Lois Chandler Gilbert (d. 1969) went to China in 1925 to teach in the Yale-in- China college of Yali, at Changsha. Due to warfare between North and South rival factions, they were evacuated to the United States in 1927. They returned in 1929 and, except for a furlough in 1935-36, were stationed in Shantung Province as missionaries for the United Church of Christ until 1941. Lewis Gilbert was a lecturer in Oberlin's Graduate School of Theology from 1954 to 1961.
