Mullen, Robert A.

Robert A. Mullen of New Orleans, La., was an officer in the Confederate Navy. Mullen was captured in 1863 off the coast of Portland, Me., was imprisoned there for several months, and was transferred to Fort Warren prison in Boston, Mass., where he remained until 1865. While imprisoned Mullen engaged in correspondence with Sister Ann Aloysius of the Caritas Carney Hospital, South Boston, Mass. The charity hospital was funded through the efforts of the Catholic Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent DePaul.
