Newcomb, Simon Bolivar, b. 1838.

Simon Bolivar Newcomb was born on March 9, 1838 in Canada. From 1855 to 1860 Newcomb studied law in Canda. On November 19, 1867 he married Alice McDonald in Toledo, Ohio. In 1870, Newcomb moved to Texas and from 1871-1874 served as the judge of the 25th Judicial District of Texas. Newcomb moved to Las Cruces, New Mexico in 1875, where he was a law partner of Herbert B. Holt, and one of the founders of the Las Cruces College (now New Mexico State University). He also worked as a receiver for the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1881. After the death of his first wife, Alice, he married Abigail Read in Silver City, New Mexico in November of 1884. Newcomb was president of the New Mexico Bar Association in 1888.
