Hugh Lynch was born in 1934 in Brockton, MA. He attended Holy Cross College for two years and then joined the U.S. Navy and entered the flight training program. He returned to college in 1958 and graduated in 1960. He rejoined the Navy in 1961 and continued assignments in aviation. He saw action in the Vietnam War in USS Enterprise and USS Ranger in 1971-1972. He served as chairman of the Naval Operations Department and retired from the Navy in 1983. Later he was a professor in the Joint Military Operations Department at the Naval War College. He retired from the Naval War College in 2006.
