Dr. Arthur Romeyn Seymour was recognized as an ourstanding and dedicated teacher of foreign languages. He received his Ph. D. in foreign languages from the University of Wisconsin in 1907. In 1926, he became a professor of French at Florida State College for Women and served as Head of the Department of Modern Foreign Languages until 1946. In the late 1920s, the Seymours traveled to China and reorganized the curriculum of Tung Lu University. He died January 2, 1955.

Arthur's wife, Mayce Fries Seymous, was a graduate of the University of Wisconsin, and was recognized for her poetry and prose compositions. While she and Arthur were in Illinois, she became interested in world religions, specifically of India. Dr. and Mrs. Seymour became interested in the writings and philosophy of Tagore, and founded the Tagore Circle to read and discuss the poet's works. In Mayce's last few years, she wrote an essay on the contributions of Tagore. She died on March 29, 1961.
