French, Acheson, 1812-1870.
Acheson Jeremiah French (a.k.a. Ffrench) was the first Police Magistrate for the Hamilton district from 1840 to 1847. He lived at 'Monivae', a two-storey bluestone mansion located just off Ballarat Road, which was built c. 1878. After retirement he concentrated on pastoral interests, and was killed in a diving accident at St. Kilda in 1870.
