The Kate Baldwin Free Kindergarten in Savannah, Ga., was started in 1899 by George Johnson Baldwin (1856-1927) and his sisters as a memorial to their mother. The project was continued by his children, George Hull Baldwin and Dorothea Irwin, and grew into a city-wide system of kindergartens and a training school for kindergarten teachers. The kindergarten operated under the direction of Martha G. Waring, 1899-1907; Hortense M. Orcutt (died 1936), 1907-1936; and Augusta Stuart Clay and Ruth Peeples, thereafter.
