Burnell, Henry
Variant namesUnion soldier, of West Baldwin, Me.; corporal, Co. I, Eighth Maine Regiment; Burnell was captured on 16 May 1864 by Confederates during the fight to recapture Fort Darling (Chesterfield County, Va.). He was initially taken to Ft. Darling as a prisoner of war and then taken by steamer up the James River to Richmond where he was temporarily placed in Libby Prison. Eventually he was taken by train to the prison at Andersonville Ga., where officials incorrectly recorded his name as "W.L. Burnell"; he remained incarcerated in Georgia until exchanged in Apr. of 1865.
