Hide Profile

The Russell Sage Institute of Pathology was founded in 1907 by Margaret Olivia Sage (Mrs. Russell Sage). It was originally attached to the City Hospital and City Home on Blackwell's Island (now Roosevelt Island), but in 1912 transferred its activities to the Second (Cornell) Medical Division of Bellevue Hospital. Graham Lusk, a professor of physiology at the Cornell University Medical College was appointed Scientific Director while Dr. Eugene DuBois became Medical Director. The Institute undertook detailed studies of nutrition, heat production, and energy production in health and in disease and investigated the relationship of fever to metabolism. This work continued after the Institute moved to the new Cornell University Medical Center in 1932. The Institute operated until 1962 as part of the Dept. of Medicine.
