Selma Cotton Mill Company (1895-1900).

Hide Profile

The company was organized in Selma, Dallas Co., Ala., in 1895. Ernest Lamar provided the original impetus on April 24 of that year, by making an informal proposal to a group of Selma investors. They then elected W.R. Nelson as Chairman of the investors, F.M. Stillwell as Secretary, and Ernest Lamar as head of the feasibility committee, and M.A. Keith and M.J. Meyer also were placed on that committee. After deciding the project was feasible, Lamar was elected the next week as chairman of the board of the subscribers. Subsequently, Lamar was elected chairman of the board of directors and president. The other directors included S.D. Holt, also vice-president; F.M. Stillwell, also treasurer; Aaron Maas, also Secretary; W.R. Nelson, W.C. Ward, Jr., and H.S.D. Mallory, also attorney for the company. The corporation built a cotton mill which began production in 1897 Jan. It continued until sold by the sheriff of Dallas Co., Ala., in the summer of 1899, following a failed reorganization attempt in which the company would have been renamed the Black Belt Cotton Mill Company.
