John F. Gummere graduated from Haverford College in 1922 and received his Ph.D. in Indo-European languages from the University of Pennsylvania. He taught at William Penn Charter School in Philadelphia and served as headmaster from 1941 to 1968. After his retirement he taught Latin and English at Haverford and contributed a weekly column, '"Words, Etc.,'" to The Philadelphia Inquirer. He was a long-time member of Haverford College's Board of Managers and was a founder of the National Association of Independent Schools.
