Almand, Claude, 1915-1957

Composer, teacher, pianist, choral conductor, administrator, Assistant Dean of the University of Louisville School of Music, Louisville, Kentucky, 1948-1953, Claude Marion Almand was born May 31, 1915 in Winnsboro, Louisiana. He died in an automobile accident in Florida Sept. 12, l957. From 1953 until his death he was Dean of the School of Music, Stetson University, De Land, Florida. Prior to coming to Louisville he had been a professor of music at the George Peabody College for Teachers (now a part of Vanderbilt University). From 1944-1948 he was on the faculties of the University of Louisville and the School of Church Music of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. He was a graduate of Louisiana College (B.A. and B.M., 1934), Sherwood Music School, Chicago (1934), Louisiana State University (M.M., 1938), and the Eastman School of Music (Ph. D., 1940). He received commissions from the Pi Kappa Omicron National Band Fraternity (Roustabout: overture for band (1952)) and from the Louisville Orchestra (John Gilbert; a steamboat overture (1949) and Concerto for piano and orchestra (1949)).
