Born on Dec. 14,1899 near Van Buren, Ohio. Worked with Charles F. Kettering at General Motors doing research on combustion in automotive engines, authoring and co-authoring a number of publications on the internal combustion engine and emissions. He retired in 1963 as head of General Motor's research laboratories fuels and lubricants department. His work led to the development of high compression ratio engines, which resulted in less petroleum consumption. He received the SAE's (Society of Automotive Engineers) Horning Memorial award, along with Gerald M. Rassweiler, for the first motion picture of the combustion process in an auto engine.
