William A. Kobbe (1840-1931), United States Army officer, was born in New York. During his military career he was a private, 7th New York State Militia; 1st lieutenant and captain, 178th New York Infantry Regiment; 2nd lieutenant, 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment; 1st lieutenant, captain and major, 3rd U.S. Artillery Regiment; colonel, 35th U.S. Volunteer Infantry Regiment; commander, 3rd Brigade, 1st Division, VIII Corps; brigadier general, military governor of the province of Albay, Luzon; commanding general, District of Mindanao and Jolo; commanding general, Department of Dakota. He retired from the Army as a major general in 1904.
