An act of the General Assembly approved April 2, 1839, authorized formation of the Rockfish Navigation and Blue Ridge Turnpike Company as a corporation to improve navigation on the Rockfish River, and to construct a turnpike road from the highest point on the river, across the Blue Ridge at Walter's Gap, to intersect the Valley Road at some point between Greensville and Waynesboro in Augusta County.
