Student at South Carolina College (Columbia, S.C.) during 1850s; son of Catherine Elizabeth Faber Winsmith and Dr. John C. Winsmith (1802-1888), physician and longtime S.C. legislator from Spartanburg District, S.C. who served as a Democrat in the House (1830-1831, 1852-1857, 1860-1861) and Senate (1865-1866), and joined Republican party in 1870 during Reconstruction.
