Frederick Date moved from Indiana to the vicinity of Valdez, Alaska, in 1898. He was a prospector and served as an axman and guide on the expedition under Captain W.R. Abercrombie in 1899. He worked for the Alaska Road Commission (1905-1916) various trails near Fairbanks. In 1914, he began work for the Alaska Railroad and eventually became roundhouse foreman at Nenana and later at Healy. He retired in 1936. After leaving Valdez, Date and his wife lived primarily in Fairbanks. He died in Oregon.
