John Calvin Holbrook was born in Brattleboro. He followed his father, John Holbrook, into the book publishing industry and joined Richardson, Lord, and Holbrook in Boston in 1828(?). His poor business management skills brought ruin to his own and his father's finances, leading him to eventually sell the company in 1836. He moved to Iowa in 1840, was ordained in 1842, and found great success as a missionary and minister, spending the last six decades of his life founding and growing several prominent Midwestern religious institutions.
