Robert West Howard (1908-1988), a writer and journalist, first began reporting for various papers in New York City in 1925. From 1935-1937 he served with the Work Project Administration's Federal Writers' Project. Howard also served as editor of the Farm Journal from 1938-1943, Pathfinder from 1943-1945, and for the American Meat Institute's literature from 1954-1959. After 1959 Howard wrote over 13 books, including Hoofbeats of Destiny (about the Pony Express), The Horse in America, and This is the West .
