Leonard E. Plachta was born on April 23, 1929. He received his B.A. and M.B.A. from the Univ. of Detroit and Ph. D. from Michigan State Univ. Dr. Plachta was a faculty member and dept. chair at Alma College and the Univ. of Detroit. He joined the faculty at CMU as a business professor in 1972. Eventually Dr. Plachta was named Dean of the College of Business Education. In Jan. 1992 he became CMU's Interim President and was named as CMU's 11th president in Oct. 1994. While president, Dr. Plachta focused on developing effective academic programs, improving student services, and creating an efficient management and financial structure. He retired on July 31, 2000. The newly renovated Warriner Auditorium was named in honor of Dr. Plachta and his wife, Louise, in fall of 2000. Both Plachtas served as CMU's Campus Ambassadors Emeritus. Leonard Plachta died on Jan. 22, 2008 in Mount Pleasant (Mich.). (This information is from the collection.).
