Peter Henry Wolfe was born October 31, 1915 in Hartford, Connecticut to Lithuanian immigrants, George and Antoinette Wolfe. Peter had two sisters, Helen and Aldona. On January 4, 1934, he married Marie DeSantis, and they had three sons: Robert, Frank and William. A fourth child died in infancy. Eventually they divorced, Peter becoming an alcoholic and a drifter. Peter used hiking as an outlet to conquer his addiction. He began by hiking the Appalacian Trail in 1972. By 1974, he began hiking the North Country Trail, which then spanned from Bennington, Vermont to Lake Sakakawea, North Dakota. He worked with Ruth Alford MacFarlane on a book of his hiking experiences. He marked a new trail, dubbed "the Adventure Trail," in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Peter died May 1, 1990.
