Virginia Steele Wood was a native of North Carolina and worked as the reference specialist in naval and maritime history at the Library of Congress, Washington, D.C. She received her undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, a master's degree from Boston University, and a master's degree in library science from Catholic University of American in Washington. For several generations her family lived along the Georgia coast and Wood has conducted research on this area throughout her career. In addition to her award-winning book, Live Oaking: Southern Timber for Tall Ships, Wood has edited for publication early diaries and other historical documents that concern coastal Georgia.
