L.S. Ayres & Co. (Indianapolis, Ind.)
Indianapolis department store chain that began in 1872 when Lyman S. Ayres of Geneva, N.Y. purchased controlling interest in the Trade Palace, an Indianapolis dry and fancy goods store. The flagship store was built at 1-15 West Washington St. in 1905. Suburban mall stores were opened in the 1950s-1990s in Indianapolis and other Indiana cities. The May Company bought Ayres in 1986, and the flagship store closed in 1992.
