Hide Profile

Professor Emeritus Murray M. Horowitz (1918- ), Brooklyn born and bred, attended local elementary and high schools. He continued his education at Brooklyn College where he received his B.A. and M.A. degrees and then received his PhD. from Columbia University. Between 1961 and 1977, Murray Horowitz was a Brooklyn College history professor. During the 1960's, he served as the college's Associate Dean of Faculty as well as Dean of the college. That is why Professor Horowitz has always felt a special nexus to the college and, in fact, this long and close association helped him decide to write a book about the early years of growth at the college. Although Brooklyn College was established in 1930 by the New York City Board of Higher Education, it did not have a campus to call its own until a 26 acre site was purchased in the Midwood section of Brooklyn in 1934. Prior to that, the "campus" had consisted of rented space in an assortment of downtown Brooklyn office buildings. When Professor Horowtiz wrote about all of this and more in his book Brooklyn College, the First Half Century (1981), he admitted that the "book was meant to be a history ... to convey the spirit of the times, to analyze developments, to draw conclusions ... to present a story" the college's first president, William Boylan, addressed Mayor LaGuardia and pleaded with him to approve the funding for a permanent campus. Presdent Boyland was so "passionate in his plea ... " that Mayor LaGuardia soon came through with the necessary help. Brooklyn College was finally built in 1935. In conjunciton with Professor Horowitz's research and writing of Brooklyn College, the First Half Century, he interviewed quite a number of former Brooklyn College staff members-former college presidents, retired professors, the college architect, chief librarian and many others. This was how Horowitz was able to create not only a book about the college's early years but also an oral history of that time period. And, witht the publication of the book, Professor Horowitz had become Brooklyn College's noted historian.
