Born in Saxony; editor of the social democratic women's periodical Die Gleichheit 1892-1917; headed the International Women's Secretariat of the Second International from 1907; instigated International Women's Day, first celebrated in 1911; joined the Unabhängige Sozialdemokratische Partei Deutschlands (USPD) in 1917 and the Kommunistische Partei Deutschlands (KPD) in 1919; worked for the COMINTERN from 1920-1933.
