Richards, Samuel P.
Samuel P. Richards, stationer and book dealer, was born March 3, 1824, in Hooknorton, Oxfordshire, England, and died April 18, 1910, in Atlanta, Georgia. His family immigrated to the United States, first to New York and then to Penfield, Georgia, when he was young. He attended Mercer University in Penfield (1846-1848). He and his brother, Jabez, opened a retail book and stationery business in Macon, Georgia (J.J. and S.P. Richards), and moved it to Atlanta, Georgia, in 1861. The business name was changed to S.P. Richards and Son, when Richards bought out his brother and took his oldest son, Arthur, into the business. Richards retired in 1894 (after Arthur's death), and his other sons, Russell, George, and Walter, took over the business (S.P. Richards Co.).
