W. Landon was chief of an expedition to evaluate the area of southeastern Alaska near Admiralty Island for use as a lumber camp, on behalf of the Alaska Ship Building & Lumber Company of San Francisco. The expedition sailing on the schooner Ino, left San Francisco on August 29, 1874, arrived in Alaska two weeks later, explored for a month, and arrived back in San Francisco on October 28, 1874. The company was formed on January 5, 1875 by nine trustees,all San Francisco men: H. B. Tichenor (who owned the Ino), Thomas H. Selby (ex-mayor of San Francisco), William T. Coleman (prominent merchant and member of the San Francisco Vigilance Committee), W. F. Babcock, William Burling, Calvin Paige, H. D. Bacon (merchant), Matthew Turner, and John Parrott (merchant).
