The Emily and Ernest Woodruff Foundation was a charitable foundation organized by Emily and Ernest Woodruff in 1938. Ernest Woodruff was the president of the Trust Company of Georgia and had bought the Coca-Cola Company from the Candler family in 1919. The principle assets of the foundation were gifts and bequests of Coca-Cola International Corporation stock from Ernest, his wife Emily, and their son, Henry F. Woodruff. The foundation provided grants to religious, charitable, and educational institutions in Georgia, especially in the Atlanta area. Some of the foundation awardees include the colleges that make up the Atlanta University Center, Agnes Scott College, Atlanta Arts Alliance, Atlanta Community Chest, Boy Scouts of American, Junior Achievement, and the Salvation Army. Emory University, in particular, has benefited from support from the Emily and Ernest Woodruff Foundation. Because of changes to tax laws, the foundation's trustees changed the organization's status from a private foundation to a "supporting organization" in 1974. At the same time, the trustees changed the name to the Emily and Ernest Woodruff Fund, Inc. In 1979 Robert W. Woodruff and his brother, George W. Woodruff, liquidated the holdings of the fund and gave the proceeds ($105 million) to Emory University.
