University of Utah. Dept. of Family and Community Medicine
The Hypertension Detection and Follow-Up Program was sponsored by the National Heart and Lung Institute of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to determine the effectiveness of varying methods of treatment in reducing expected morbidity and mortality among people with elevated blood pressure in defined communities. The pilot program began locally in Salt lake City in July 1971 at the Neighborhood Health Center. In 1973 it became a cooperative pilot project conducted with the Salt Lake County Medical Society and the University of Utah College of Medicine. The program was administered by the Dept. of Family and Community Medicine under the direction of Dr. C. Hilmon Castle.
