Lowell House (Cambridge, Mass.)

Hide Profile

The bells in the tower of Lowell House are from the Donailov Monestary in Russia. The largest weighs thirteen and one-half tons and is nine feet in diameter. They were a gift of a Mr. Crane, a former ambassador to the U.S.S.R. He saved them from being melted down for scrap metal during the interval between the World Wars. It was later found that one of the bells was not a member of the original set and would not be harmonious with the other bells so it was moved to the Baker Library at the Business School.
