The Reverend (Arthur) Michael Hollis was a missionary for the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Tinnevelly, now known as Tirunevelly, Tamil Nadu, South India, before his appointment in 1942 to the Bishopric of Madras. In 1948 he left this post to become Moderator of the newly formed Church of South India, a position which he held until 1954. He also undertook several academic posts including Professor of Church History at the United Theological College, Bangalore, India.
