Marie Halun Bloch was born December 1, 1910 in Komarno, Ukraine, and came to the United States at the age of four. She attended the University of Chicago and graduated with a Ph.B. in 1935. She published her first book for children, Danny Doffer, in 1946. Marie Halun Bloch wrote several books for children drawing on her Ukrainian heritage including Marya of Clark Avenue (1957), the story of a young Ukrainian-American girl and her struggle to retain her heritage while trying to fit in with "American" life. Another book drawing on her interest in contemporary Ukrainian life, Aunt America (1963) was cited as a Notable Book for Children by the American Library Association in 1963 and was on the Master List for the William Allen White Award in 1966.

Marie Halun Bloch also used her interest in Ukrainian history in writing Bern, Son of Mikula (1972), a story set in the Ukraine during the Middle Ages. She was also interested in earth history and wrote several books on the topic including Dinosaurs (1955) and Mountains on the Move (1960). Marie Halun Bloch drew on her life in Colorado as the setting for Tony of the Ghost Towns (1956) and The House on Third High (1962). She always felt that she owed her readers a "good story" and tried to offer them "new insights" or "glimpses" into "another part of America" or "the world."

Marie Halun Bloch died on February 7, 1998 in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
