The company, jointly owned and controlled by the Northern Pacific Railway Company and the Great Northern Railway Company, also controlled the Oregon Trunk Railway, the Pacific and Eastern Railway, the Oregon Electric Railway, the United Railways Company, Ruth Realty Company, and the Great Northern Pacific Steamship Company. In 1911 it acquired the properties of the Astoria and Columbia River Railroad Company, and in 1943 the properties of the Gales Creek and Wilson River Railroad. In 1970, it became part of the newly formed Burlington Northern, Inc.
