Grey, George, Sir, 1812-1898
Variant namesSir George Grey was Governor of South Australia 1841-1845, New Zealand 1845-1853, Cape Colony 1853-59. He was recalled to England 1859 for encouraging, without special permission, a policy of South African federation, but was later restored to office and was again Govenor of New Zealand 1861-1867. He published works relating to language, topography and the history of New Zealand and Australia.

Explorer, politician, Governor of South Australia and New Zealand. George Grey led a Royal Geographical Society sponsored expedition to the Kimberley Region of Western Australia in 1837-1838. In 1839, when Resident Magistrate of Albany, he published Vocabulary of the Dialects spoken by the Aboriginal races of South West Australia.
