In 1836, White was appointed by the Methodist Church to serve as a doctor at Jason Lee's Willamette Mission. He served at the mission until 1841, when he disagreed with Lee regarding mission policy and resigned, returning east by ship. In 1861, White was chosen as an Indian agent to the California region. Elijah White died on April 3, 1879.
