The board was established in 1899 as the State Board of Embalming. It was renamed the Georgia State Board of Funeral Service in 1950 and was given its present title in 1981. A consumer member was added to the board in 1978.

The board regulates embalming, funeral directing, and the care and disposition of the dead. It prescribes rules and regulations governing applications for license as a funeral director or embalmer, and sets standards of proficiency for those engaged in funeral practice. The board is also responsible for licensing funeral establishments, and may adopt and enforce rules to define necessary drainage, ventilation, sanitary flooring, and necessary instruments and supplies for the preparation and embalming of the dead. It may also set standards and require standard permits to move corpses by common carrier and other transportation.

Members of the board are authorized to act as inspectors of funeral establishments and those licensed as funeral directors or embalmers. The board revoke a license for incompetency, for conviction of a crime involving moral turpitude, gross or willful malpractice, or for violation of state law or board regulations. In conducting its hearings, the board can issue subpoenas and require the production of documents and other records.
