Stephen Shu Ning Liu was a landlord's son, born on March 16, 1930. He grew up in near the Yangtze River, with six other children. Liu's grandfather taught him the Chinese Classics when he was five. Liu graduated from the University of Nanking, Nanking, China, in May 1948. He then went on to get his B.A. in English in May 1956, from Wayland Baptist College. At the University of Texas in Austin, he obtained his M.A. in English in 1959. In August of 1973, Lui received a Ph. D. in English from the University of North Dakota. Stephen Shu Ning Liu taught at many colleges and universities. His essays, short stories, poems are published in English and Chinese, and can be found in various books, literary magazines, and national newspapers.
