Chester H. Linscheid was born on Feb. 11, 1903 at Busby, Montana. Linschied attended Bethel College in Newton, Kansas in 1932, he then attended the University of Oklahoma from 1933-1934, receiving a B.A.in Library Science during the 1935-36 term, and he was a librarian and instructor in social science at Panhandle A & M College. In 1936, he became the assistant librarian at South Dakota State University, a position he held until 1944. During the summer of 1938, he attended the University of Illinois. Likewise during the summer of 1939 and 1940-1941, Linschied attended the University of Michigan from which he received a M.A. in Library Science in 1941. From 1944-1946, Linschied served as acting librarian at South Dakota State University. In 1946, he accepted a position as librarian for the College of Agriculture, University of Nebraska. During 1949, he became the librarian at New Mexico A & M (now New Mexico State University (NMSU)) and in 1950, he was named head of that institution's Library. He retired from NMSU in 1969. Linschied's professional activities included membership in the American Library Association (ALA), the Association of College Research Librarires, Association of Higher Education, Bibliographic Society of America, Southwestern Library Association, New Mexico Library Association (of which he was President 1952-53), and the New Mexico Education Association. He served as the ALA coordinator for New Mexico from 1954-1955 and was state membership chairman from 1958-1962. On a national level, Linschied served on the ALA council from 1960-1964.
